Washington state nears ban on anti-gay discrimination The state Senate is said to be just a few votes shy of approving of bill that would outlaw anti-gay discrimination in hiring, housing and insurance. The measure has already passed the state House and Gov. Christine Gregoire also has indicated her support. "I appeal to you as a gay man, as a native son of this state, as your colleague, to pass this bill," said Rep. Ed Murray, D-Seattle. The Seattle Times/Associated Press

Georgia school district relents, OKs student group White County High School students prevailed in their fight to establish a club for gays and lesbians and their straight supporters at their school in Cleveland, Ga. The club has named itself Peers Rising in Diversity Education. Journal and Constitution (Atlanta)

Maine again tries to ban anti-gay bias. A bill working its way through the state legislature won approval from the Judiciary Committee yesterday, but some legislators have vowed to attach amendments that would put the measure to a statewide vote, a move Gov.
